The Invisible Man is structured chronologically in order to present Ellison's social and political involvement, from his childhood in Oklahoma to the present day. Ralph Ellison, who was a native of Oklahoma, was one of the first African American novelists to publish a successful book and his work has been lauded by literary critics around the world.
